REDGE Contemporary Art Center is an adaptive reuse project designed by Atelier Meadow in China, transforming the first three floors of an office tower into a contemporary art center open to the community.
 

Completed only a decade ago, the existing building presented spatial limitations when confronted with the complexity of a cultural program.

Organized around a compact structural grid and inward-facing corridors surrounding the elevator core, the interior suffered from blind circulation routes, limited natural light, and compressed ceiling heights due to mechanical systems suspended at 2.6 meters.
 

The design strategy, developed by Atelier Meadow under the direction of Edoardo Nieri, centers on lightness as a spatial principle. Rather than relying on formal minimalism, the intervention reconfigures the building’s internal relationships to create openness, continuity, and visual connections between floors.
 

Existing double-height spaces were activated through the insertion of lightweight mezzanines and new vertical connections. An elliptical staircase and a central void establish visual relationships between the museum spaces, while previously enclosed corridors were opened to become areas for interaction and exhibition.
 

The program is conceived as a polyfunctional organism: the ground floor hosts the museum, event spaces, an art bistro, and a bookshop; the second floor accommodates cultural production spaces such as workshops and a multimedia theater; and the third floor integrates offices, co-working areas, and additional galleries.
 

Through spatial openings, filtered light, and a system of interfaces and perforated partitions, the project transforms a compact office building into a dynamic cultural environment, where circulation, light, and program merge to generate a new collective space.
