On the Threshold, Listening

A project that reinterprets the relationship between coast and sea, between the visible and the submerged, between memory and future.
Edoardo Nieri, from Italy and founder of the architectural studio “Atelier Meadow,” is one of the participant of the 19th International Architecture Exhibition, La Biennale di Venezia 2025. Present within the Italian Pavilion with the project “On the Threshold, listening” Nieri offers a sensitive and contemporary reflection on the deep, often forgotten, connection between the Italian coasts and their submerged cultural heritage.
The project emerged from a national call directed at designers, scholars, and cultural operators, aimed at gathering visions and contributions for rethinking the relationship between land and sea, particularly in coastal and port areas. The call, titled “TERRÆ AQUÆ. Italy and the Intelligence of the Sea”, led to an exhibition curated by Guendalina Salimei, which opened on May 9 with a reserved preview, then officially opened to the public on May 10.
“On the Threshold, listening” stands precisely at the physical and symbolic boundary that separates and unites land and sea. Through a multidisciplinary approach that combines architecture, research, and storytelling, Edoardo Nieri proposes an architecture of listening, a suspended threshold where the submerged memory of our marine landscape resurfaces. The project translates into an emotional map inviting visitors to gently approach an invisible yet profoundly present heritage, made of wrecks, stories, myths, and relationships.
The work fully aligns with the vision of the Atelier Meadow studio, which blends the poetics of building, rooting in the landscape, and a striving for a silent yet powerful beauty, capable of engaging with nature and the memory of places.
With this project, Edoardo Nieri not only participates in the Venice Biennale but also signs a silent manifesto for a new way of inhabiting and preserving our coasts: with listening, respect, and vision.
